A recipe for igniting and developing community engaged students 
 

From Friday, January 29th, 2010 to Sunday, January 31st Student Volunteer Connections is hosting a conference that aims to mentor and challenge students to become engaged citizens in their community through positive social action.

Student delegates will participate in the 3-day conference as well as student of all ages and at all levels of education who are encourages to attend by registering on the SVC website.  

The theme of the conference is “Relearn. Rethink. React”, extracting the meaning that students must dig into the root of today’s issues, challenge outdated ways of thinking, discover real solutions, and initiate positive action.  The conference hopes to foster social action in students through innovative teachings, social networking and hands-on experiences. 

The conference launches on Friday evening with keynote speaker Marva Wisdom; a community trainer, volunteer expert, political activist, and a graduate in the Masters of Leadership program at the University of Guelph.  Following Wisdom’s speech, internationally acclaimed Free the Children singer, Louise Kent, will give a live performance of her music that focuses on social change.  

 

On Saturday sessions will aim to generate thought about current issues in our world with a focus on: Environmental Sustainability, Poverty, and Health and Wellness. The afternoon will feature skill building workshops. Several speakers will be heard from throughout the day including: 

 

  • GuluWalk founders Adrian Bradbury & Kieran Hayward, 
  • Meal Exchange National Executive Director Dave Kranenburg
  • Community expert Gayle Valeriote
  • World Adventurist Ray Zahab 
  • Guelph Green Party campaign manager, Neil Dubois, 
  • Students Offering Support (aka S.O.S.) founder and president, Greg Overholt
  • a panel of highly dedicated University of Guelph student leaders
